Are Students Worth It?
They live all around you jogging around the block, hitting Starbucks for a
coffee, carrying backpacks sitting in restaurants with their laptops open,
studying or emailing. Looking unimpressive at first glance thousands of college
students over half from broken homes skeptical about life and full of
doubt. Exposed to temptations, sometimes lonely and searching for intimacy, and
challenged by having to make decisions on their own, 75% say truth is relative.
Their attitude toward Christ, Christianity, or the church generally is cold and
apathetic.
There are close to 18 million (23,000 in Newark, DE) college students in
America. There are more than 566,000 (3,000 in Newark, DE) international
students from almost 200 nations studying here. There are more than 4,276 U.S.
private and public 2, and 4- year institutions.
Dr. Charles Malik, former Secretary-General of the United Nations said: The
University is the clear-cut fulcrum with which to move the world. More potently
than by any other means, change the university and you will change the world.
Weigh these statements about the importance of campus ministry cited by Alpha
Chi Campus Ministries of Boston, MA:
College students are looking for answers and are willing to consider the claims
of Jesus Christ. College students are mobile, young, energetic, and more able to
invest their lives for the cause of Christ. College students are the greatest
source of laborers for impacting a campus, nation, or continent with the message
of Jesus. College students are the future leaders of tomorrow and will influence
every field of study, profession, and level of society. College students
influence campuses, business, governments, and history. College students
come in greater numbers from foreign countries. Most of them will go home to
influence their country with what they have learned in the U.S.
95% of people who become Christians in America, do so by the age of 25,
according to this recent statement by Paul Sans, who writes for the Signs of the
Times.
And last this comment by Russ Whitten, Campus Minister of Colorado State
University, campus ministries provide the last window of opportunity for most
men and women in our country.
We can answer yes, college students are worth it. And these statements are
compelling reasons for us to be on the college campus.
